Blue Ribbon Launch

Last week I attended the launch of a new blue ribbon for men’s health.

Started by a Mel Lacey, who fought prostate cancer after a shock diagnosis, and the Chairman of the Pink Ribbon Foundation, Jonathan Prince, the Blue Ribbon Foundation raises awareness of male cancers and men’s health issues.  It has three clear goals:

•             To raise awareness of male health issues – particularly cancer.
•             To use the Blue Ribbon as a rallying banner to help bring about awareness; and to encourage other male health charities to adopt the ribbon.
•             To support other male health and cancer charities by offering grants.

Whilst recovering from major surgery for prostate cancer, Mel vowed to raise the profile and awareness of male cancers. After doing some research, he contacted Jonathan Prince, the chairman of the long-established Pink Ribbon Foundation (PRF).

The two men then set about creating a new awareness charity for men based on the same successful lines as the PRF. And after gently growing from its roots in Norfolk, the Blue Ribbon Foundation has taken a giant step for ‘menkind’ when it was formally launched at the Houses of Parliament.

It was a real pleasure to be invited to the national launch and hear about the hard work that Mel has put in to making this possible. We have all seen how effective the pink ribbon has been in raising the awareness of women’s health issues and I hope that the blue ribbon will have the same success.  I believe that this will encourage more discussion of men’s health issues so that more lives will be saved.
