Commons Speech of the Year - 04:16 pm, Mon 11th Jul 2011

Speech of the year
Last week I was honoured to win the House Magazine award for Commons Speech of the Year.

MPs had the chance to vote on the award from a shortlist of four and I am told that more MPs voted in this year’s awards than ever before. The other MPs on the shortlist were Kris Hopkins, Jacob-Rees-Mogg and Prime Minister David Cameron.

I’m sure you can imagine just how thrilled I was to receive more votes than the Prime Minister.

The best part of this is that my speech seems to have had an effect. I spoke about bringing the military covenant into law, to make sure that Britain always gives proper recognition of the sacrifices our military personnel make for the good of us all.

The Government seemed reluctant to move ahead with this despite positive words in the past, but since that debate took place they have changed their position and will be taking this forward. I hope the extra publicity that the speech has recieved thanks to the award will serve as a reminder to the Government about just how important this is. Everyone who spoke out for our troops and campaigned for this change in the law deserves thanks. I am just glad that I could add my voice to theirs.
