Northern Rail are promoting the fact that automated ticket gates are now in operation at Bolton Railway station.


One of the regular complaints I hear from commuters is that the lines are so long for tickets in the morning at Bolton station. People see four or five members of staff checking tickets, but very few behind the counter selling them.


I would hope that automated gates will help to alleviate this problem and that Northern will now allocate more staff to ticket sales. I am sure many residents would see this as a big improvement to their daily experience.


I have raised this issue with Northern Rail directly and was told that “sharing any staffing plans remains confidential” and that a focus on digital tickets and online sales should reduce demand for counter sales. This does not reassure me.
