This week is Youth Work Week and I’m showing my support to the National Youth Agency in their campaign to protect and develop good services for the future.

A common concern raised by local residents is that they wish there were more facilities and activities for young people. Youth work often provides much needed spaces for young people to meet and have fun.

Beyond that, the impact that good youth workers can have is vital to many young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds. They can provide security and belonging within the wider community, encourage social and emotional development, build confidence, and help people become responsible citizens.

The Government’s cuts agenda has really hit youth services hard. An estimated £387m has been cut from youth service spending by local authorities in the last six years according to Unison. The need for good services has not reduced though.

All this week the National Youth Agency will be highlighting the great work done by services around the country. You can find out more here – http://www.nya.org.uk/category/blog/

Young people need good quality services, and I’m happy to support them.
