I was shocked to read in the Bolton News last week that First Bus will be withdrawing the 575 service between Bolton and Horwich in April.
This is one of the most important bus routes in Bolton, running along a main arterial road linking the town centre, residential areas and the Middlebrook retail park. Many local residents depend on this service as part of their daily commute.
The decision is particularly surprising as the services continue to be extremely well used, particularly at peak times. I struggle to see how this could not be profitable for the bus operator.
Arriva run a similar service, which continues on to Wigan, but there would not be enough capacity on those buses at peak time to also handle the First commuters should the frequency remain the same.
I am very concerned about this development and I believe that local residents deserve clear information on why the decision has been taken and what will happen next. I have written to both First Bus and to Transport for Greater Manchester on this.
It is my hope that either First Bus will reconsider or an alternative operator will come forward to ensure the service continues. I will do what I can to help ensure this is the case.
I’m interested to hear from local residents who will be effected by this.
What would it mean to you if the 575 is withdrawn?
