The Government need to change the way they treat disabled people in this country.
The assessment process for benefits like Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance is causing unjust and unnecessary hardship.
I have met with many local residents who have very serious health problems and feel as though they are in a constant all-consuming battle with the Government just to get the extra help that they are entitled to.
I’ve seen cases where people had had their Motability car taken off them due to a bad decision, only to have their eligibility reinstated later on and end up at the back of a waiting list for a new car. That’s almost a year of someone’s life disrupted by this broken system with people left feeling isolated in their own home.
People with long-term conditions that are never going to get any better are continuously dragged back in for stressful reassessments and people with fluctuating conditions are left with nothing if they happen to have a good health day on the day of their interview.
These private companies with no medical qualifications are constantly making bad decisions at assessments and stripping people of their support. This forces them to go for months with no income until they can finally get an appeal and get the decision overturned.
The system is aggressive and stressful, they don’t treat people with basic dignity and respect, and quite frankly it isn’t fit for purpose.
I am one of 100 MPs who have written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to outline our concerns about the system and suggest reforms that are urgently needed. You can read our full letter below.
