I am supporting a new campaign calling on the Government to make sure that everyone who is entitled to Pension Credit receives it.
Almost 2 million older people aged 65 and over are living in poverty in the UK.
Pension Credit is the income-related benefit designed to lift them out of poverty, but it is estimated that more 40% of households who are entitled to Pension Credit do not receive it.
Here in Bolton North East constituency it is estimated that 2,580 older people are missing out on a combined £6,860,000 every year.
I am working with the charity Independent Age, who have produced a report calling for the Government to adopt new approaches to Pension Credit.
We want to ensure that at least 75% of eligible people receive Pension Credit by the end of 2020, at least 95% by the end of 2022, and 100% by 2025.
Pension Credit is supposed to top up the income of the poorest pensioners and ensure everyone has a basic decent amount to live on, but it’s been underclaimed for years. It’s a safety net that’s full of holes.
I have written to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to highlight this campaign and ensure that this money reaches all who need it.
