Keep a Step Ahead of Winter

The rising cost of fuel is an issue that many people raise with me and I’m sure it will be at the front of many people’s minds now that the temperatures are starting to fall.

I’m campaigning to stop the big six energy companies ripping off Bolton families. Despite warm words from Theresa May the Government continue to stall on any meaningful action, which could mean another winter where too many people are forced to choose between heating their homes and eating.

Before the cold sets in there are a things that you can do which could make a big difference. Be prepared and keep a step ahead this winter. I want everyone in Bolton to understand what help is available for them, and for their family and friends.

Make sure you get the best deal. Households with the cheapest energy bills tend to be those who regularly shop around. If you’re not sure where to start don’t be worried about asking for help. I’ll be sharing information soon about the Big Clean Energy Switch which could be an ideal starting point for you.

Get a smart meter. Your energy supplier will be able to install smart meters, which mean an end to estimated bills. A smart energy monitor shows how much energy you are using, and what you are spending.

Warm Home Discount Scheme. You might be able to get £140 off your electricity bill under the Warm Home Discount Scheme if you’re receiving the guarantee credit part of Pension Credit or on a low income. www.gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme

Winter proof your home. Simple tips like these can go a long way to keeping the warmth inside so you don’t have to turn the heating on as much. http://www.britishgas.co.uk/the-source/your-home/improving/winter-warm-home-tips

Grants to help pay off your energy debts. If you’re in debt to your energy supplier, you might be able to get a grant from a charitable trust to help pay it off. The following energy companies offer grants and schemes that are open to anyone - you don't have to be a customer:

Seek advice. Charities such as Citizen’s Advice are able to talk you through what support you may be eligible for and even apply on your behalf – I would urge people to give them a call or drop in to a centre if you need help with this.
