Last month I had the privilege of visiting Rathbone for the opening of their brand new training facility. During the election I often spoke about the importance of giving young people opportunities, and I was extremely encouraged to meet so many people who care about creating those opportunities for young people here in Bolton.
There are lots of courses available, including health and social care, English, maths, motor vehicle maintenance and repair and apprenticeships in a variety of areas. The new facility brings the practical hands-on subjects onto the same site as state of the art classrooms.
The best part of the event was meeting young people like Savhanna, who felt she didn’t quite fit into the system of her high school and struggled to get ahead but still wanted to make the most of her life and get the qualifications she needs to succeed. After several years at Rathbone she’s now looking ahead to study to become a midwife. It’s stories like hers that drive me to keep pushing for my constituents to receive more opportunities, because if that second chance had not been there for Savhanna she would’ve been left on a very different path.
I was invited to say a few words to mark the occasion, you can watch this below.
